At New Image Dentist, we provide a full lineup of periodontal services. These treatments work to correct problems and issues that affect the supporting structures of a person’s teeth. One of the most common oral health issues that a person can experience is that of periodontitis or gum disease. This condition affects nearly half of all adults, and it can eventually lead to tooth loss if left untreated.
The problem arises when the gum tissue becomes heavily exposed to tartar and plaque. This causes the gums to appear swollen, and they will eventually begin to retract and pull away from the teeth. This establishes voids known as periodontal pockets. However, these empty voids don’t remain vacant for long, as they will most likely become prime breeding grounds for oral bacteria and unwanted build-ups. This will allow the condition to spread more easily. By measuring the depths of these pockets, we can make a determination of exactly how far the disease has progressed.
As the pockets reach deeper, the condition will eventually reach the jawbone and the connective tissues of teeth. If this happens, tooth loss can follow soon thereafter. By this point, we will most likely have to take measures to repair the jawbone itself due to the extensive damage that will have occurred.
Our practice offers treatment methods for every stage of gum disease.
Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing reaches deep below a person’s gum line using specialized dental tools. Our experts will clean out and deep tartar and plaque that is causing damage to the gums. We will also smooth out the root surfaces so that build-ups are less likely to occur in the future. Scaling and root planing is one of the most highly effective treatment methods for putting a stop to gum disease.
Gum Graft Surgery
As the gums begin to pull away from the teeth, many people experience a receding gum line. This appears unattractive, and it exposes the roots of the teeth. This puts the person at risk for serious infections. A gum graft surgery is provided to cover up the exposed roots. This is done using soft oral tissue that is harvested from other areas of the mouth. Afterward, the gum line will be restored, and serious infections will be prevented.
Dental Crown Lengthening
When the gum tissue becomes swollen and inflamed, it can cause a person to suffer from an unattractive and “gummy” smile. To fix this issue, we may provide a dental crown lengthening procedure. This process is designed to expose more of a person’s natural teeth by removing any excess gum tissue that is present. This procedure will also allow our experts to access the areas deep below the gum line so that further corrections and repairs can be made.
A gingivectomy is provided for severe cases of periodontitis that cannot be repaired with scaling and root planing. During this procedure, our experts will remove and reshape any loose and diseased gum tissue. This will eliminate the periodontal pockets and allow the gums to heal properly. By providing a gingivectomy, our experts can prevent the condition from spreading to the jawbone and causing even more serious damage.
Root Surface Debridement
Root surface debridement is a major cleaning of the root surfaces of teeth. This treatment will remove any bacteria, plaque and tartar that is present in these spaces. By removing these buildups, we can stop the condition from spreading and allow the teeth to begin the healing process. This makes root surface debridement an excellent non-surgical treatment for cleaning deep below the gum line and removing any unwanted material that may be present.
Periodontal laser treatments use a specialized laser to access and remove inflamed gum tissue that is present around a tooth’s root. The laser can then scrape away any built-up tartar and plaque, and it can smooth out rough spots to prevent future buildups from occurring. This careful process will allow the gums to begin the healing process. Many patients prefer laser periodontal treatments since they typically feature reduced pain and feature faster recovery times than traditional treatments that involve using physical tools on the oral structures.
One of the most important goals when treating gum disease is to reduce the size of the periodontal pockets that are present. To do this, we start by removing any unwanted build-ups of plaque, tartar and bacteria from these spaces. Next, an antimicrobial liquid is applied. This prevents future accumulations, and it encourages healing. After treatment is provided, the pockets will be significantly reduced in size, and future issues will be prevented.
Osseous surgery is a specialized treatment designed to reduce the size of periodontal pockets. The process involves first cutting into one’s cum tissue. The soft tissue is the flapped up so that our experts can access the build-ups of plaque and tartar that have spread to the tooth roots. In some cases, this procedure may be performed multiple times so that all of the harmful material can be taken out. Following the surgical treatment, the periodontal pockets should begin to slowly reduce in size and eventually fully recover.
After a tooth has been lost or removed, a ridge augmentation procedure may be performed to ensure proper healing. This treatment involves applying bone grafts to the alveolar ridge bone so that it can recover correctly. The bone grafts will encourage new bone growth and strengthen the jawbone overall. In most cases, the eventual goal is to install a dental implant in the structure to replace the tooth that has been lost.
One side effect of a lost or missing tooth is that the jawbone will begin to deteriorate over time. For that reason, most dental experts will work to replace a missing tooth as quickly as possible. But in some cases, this may not be possible. In these situations, it is necessary to provide ridge preservation procedures to help ensure that the jawbone does not experience major decay or deterioration. Most ridge preservation procedures consist of applying bone grafts inside of empty areas in order to slow down the deterioration process. By providing these procedures early on, it will be much easier to install dental implants later.
Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation
A pinhole gum rejuvenation is an advanced procedure that allows our experts to treat a receding gum line without making any incisions. The technique consists of making a series of very small holes in the gums. The gum tissue is then gently massaged and eased back into place using specialized tools. This covers up the tooth roots and restores the appearance of the gum tissue. Because no incision is made, the recovery time for a pinhole gum rejuvenation procedure is very quick.
Many difficulties are often encountered when attempting to install dental implants for upper teeth. One such problem is that the sinuses are located too close to the upper jaw. This issue is often the result of deterioration to the upper jaw. However, a sinus lift procedure can correct this issue and allow our experts to install dental implants. We start by cutting into the rear gum tissue to access the sinus membrane. We then push the sinuses up and away from the upper jaw. This moves the sinuses out of the way of where the dental implants will be installed. To encourage healing, bone grafts will be installed in the previous location of the sinuses. Once healing complete, dental implants can be added.
Bone grafting procedures are used to stimulate new bone growth for the jawbone. These procedures involve applying artificial bone material and specialized proteins directly to a jawbone that has experienced deterioration or decay. Eventually, the jawbone should begin to regenerate and strengthen. This will allow the jawbone to provide better support for the teeth, and it will also enable our experts to install dental implants if necessary.
