Many people avoid dental treatment simply because of fear or anxiety. Other people may associate dental treatment with high levels of discomfort or pain. To overcome these issues, dental sedation can be provided. Simply put, dental sedation is any application that is designed to reduce patient pain or discomfort during treatment. This can include both physical pain, as well as mental anxiety and other negative feelings. By providing dental sedation, we can make it easier for patients to receive dental treatment and allow our experts to focus solely on providing the best treatment possible.
Our practice offers different types of dental sedation depending on the intensity of the procedure and the needs of the patient. We may provide sedation for anything from routine dental cleanings to full oral surgery; however, we always monitor the process very closely so that the patient is kept completely safe the entire time. Most patients find that sedation does an excellent job of keeping them comfortable and stress-free during dental treatment.
Our sedation offerings include oral sedation, local anesthesia, laughing gas and IV sedation.
Oral sedation consists of a pill that the patient takes shortly before receiving treatment. This medicine will help the patient remain calm and relaxed while treatment is provided. Most patients who receive oral sedation are still somewhat aware of their surroundings, but any worries or anxieties will be replaced by feelings of comfort and relaxation. After receiving oral sedation, it may take a few hours for the medicine to wear off entirely. We require any patient who has received oral sedation to have another party drive them home following the procedure. Afterward, the patient should have no negative memories of the procedure.
Local anesthesia is used strictly for reducing any pain that a patient may experience. This is designed to numb an immediate area so that the patient experiences less pain as work is being done. After the procedure is complete, the patient will soon regain feeling in the area. A local anesthetic is used for pain management only, and it is not designed to reduce any sort of anxiety or discomfort. However, many patients are comforted by the simple fact that a local anesthetic will reduce or eliminate any pain that they might feel during the procedure.
Laughing gas is a type of vapor that is inhaled by the patient. A patient who receives laughing gas will wear a special mask over their nose and then breathe in through their nose to inhale the vapor. Shortly after taking the gas in, the patient will most likely no longer notice any feelings of anxiety or fear. During this time, they may experience a feeling of euphoria, but they will still be completely aware of their surroundings. Laughing gas is extremely safe, and it presents very few side effects or problems. The effects will begin to disappear shortly after the patient begins breathing in normal air. This makes laughing gas a great option for nervous patients who want to continue with their day as normal following dental treatment.
IV sedation consists of medicine that is provided for the patient intravenously. This type of sedation goes into effect very quickly. It can also be adjusted throughout the procedure in order to continuously provide the appropriate level of sedation for the patient. This type of sedation will typically affect the patient very intensely during the procedure, and they may be no longer aware of their surroundings. This makes it appropriate for providing the most intensive types of dental treatments and oral surgeries; however, the patient should return to normal shortly after the medicine is stopped being provided.
